St Peter’s Church Kolenchery
Just by hearing the name Kolenchery what comes to the mind of any tourist would be not the Kolenchery Town but the St Peter’s Church. This centuries-old ancient Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is believed to have been constructed in the 7th century AD. Probably, the town is known by the church and not the church by the town and that makes all the differences. If Kolenchery Town is historically important, it owes a lot to this church which has turned out to be one among the top Christian pilgrim centers in Kerala. Sadly, there are disputes over the ownership of St Peter's Church. St Peter’s Church Kolenchery was beautified with some colorful paintings when it was rebuilt in the year 1963. The annual feast is celebrated very solemnly in rememberance of the church's consecration. Thousands of pilgrims flow to the town seeking blessings from St. Peter the patron saint of the Kolenchery church.
